You will learn:
Essential Concepts of Power and Leadership
What is power? Why is it important? What is the relationship of power and politics? What do leaders do? What is the nature of politics? What is the name of the game? What are the rules of the game? How to identify various political interests? Who are the players? What are the stakes? How to play in organizational politics?

Critical Skills
What are the essential tools to build power and how to use them? In what ways does culture help or hinder the effective use of power and leadership tools? How to develop a day-to-day mindset that sustains leadership focus?

Gaining Power and Leadership
How to build an effective power base? How to identify specific political and power objectives? How to gain access to power players and sustain critical relationships? How to minimize risks in taking personal initiative? What are the target areas for the competition for leadership and power? How to develop a personal game plan for achieving power and leadership? Contract Manufacturing (CM) is a form of tax structuring that accompanies the outsourcing phenomenon which has accelerated in recent years. It is a legal structuring of manufacturing and distribution allowing US businesses to restructure operations and reporting, ranging from the hiring of employees to the collection of receivables. The benefits of CM include reduced labor costs, improved financial ratios, and enhanced operating and development procedures. The end result is the business working for management, rather than management working for the business. Seyfarth Shaw professionals will share best practices in this new structure. The experience of these attorneys as trusted advisors to and strategic business partners with leading manufacturers and distributors provides valuable insight to the implementation and operation of CM structures. Achieving these best practices in CM leads to a leaner and more efficient business with higher revenues and profits per employee and per dollar invested.

Overview
Asia-Silicon Valley Connection (ASVC) and Entrepreneur China Network (ECN) would like to cordially invite you to attend the sixth "Gong Show". This is a business plan competition that was established to bring together top entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. First, ASVC and ECN receive plans (bizplan@asvc.org) from prominent entrepreneurs, incubators, venture capital firms and angel investor groups. This year we also accepted business plans from China and will be establishing a videoconference link to Beijing during the Show. Thereafter, a committee of VCs reviews the executive summaries submitted by entrepreneurs and selects ten companies to participate in the Gong Show.

On June 16th, each presenting company will have an opportunity to provide a two-minute elevator pitch, followed by the sound of a gong, to a panel of top-tier VCs and an audience of 200-250. Based on these presentations, the venture panel selects four finalist companies to provide a ten-minute "full presentation". The winning company will be awarded a private meeting with a venture firm represented on the panel. Overview
With ample liquidity in the global markets, historically low real interest rates and large money supplies fueling the growth of Asia, investors and entrepreneurs are increasingly concerned with the concept of bridging the interface between the East and the West. This interface applies to eastern companies merging with western companies. It applies to cultural differences. It applies to technology transfer addressing cross-border differences and new markets. Record global offerings like the $10 billion share sale by Industrial & Commercial Bank of China continue to make these issues higher priorities for corporate managers. Recent landmark events such as Lenovo/IBM, TCL/Thomson and 3Com/Huawei raise the question of staying in a global business through a Chinese marriage or selling out to the Chinese cost leader.

ASVC and AAMA have put together a distinguished panel of experts to discuss two key topics related to the collaboration goal: (1) Opportunities regarding strategic partnering, mergers and acquisitions, and technology transfer. (2) Changes pertaining to regulatory barriers, growth environments, bicultural teams, and ways to overcome cultural barriers. Also covered will be how much presence is appropriate at this phase in the growth of the Asian economies. In addition, a historical overview will be conducted based on the success and failure of transpacific collaboration in the 1980's through the 1990's. Finally, a short-term and long-term outlook will be provided for bilateral venture investments and acquisitions in various sectors to benefit and bridge both sides of the Pacific.

OVERVIEW

Many Silicon Valley companies increasingly conduct business outside the United States. Yet, most emerging growth companies make mistakes in conducting international business that may cost them dearly. International rules regarding taxes, employees, joint ventures, intellectual property, and corporate formation vary, but raise the same issues: how can a company expand its business, without committing the same common mistakes made by others.

This program brings together several experts in advising companies as they conduct business internationally. The program will address the top mistakes companies make. The presentation will focus on practical advice that will be useful to companies making their first international ventures, as well as more sophisticated companies with established operations.

ASVC has invited the following industry leaders to share their experiences and strategies to help entrepreneurs avoid these mistakes.

INTRODUCTION

Since its inception in 2000, Asia-Silicon Valley Connection has been promoting the linkage of entrepreneurial initiatives between Asia and Silicon Valley. Our initial mandate was to develop our organization in Silicon Valley. ASVC is proud to embark on the next stage of its growth - establishing a synergistic presence in Asia. For the past 18 months, ASVC's management has traveled extensively to China to provide our Silicon Valley community with a more robust and dynamic linkage to Asia. Now, more than ever, Silicon Valley executives must understand how to effectively leverage the opportunities and avoid the risks associated with doing business in China. To facilitate this understanding, ASVC is proud to present The 2004 Road Show - China Connect with our China alliance partner, the Entrepreneur China Network, an organization that provides senior executives from high-growth companies a support network with the intent of improving their ability to build great companies. TOPICS

Show Me the Billion (Ren and Renminbi)!

  • Distribution (Ren). A key to understanding China is to understand the realistic opportunities for building distribution networks in China. We will look beyond the oversimplified statistics to assess the true market opportunity and prospects in China.

  • Sources of Capital (Renminbi). As the U.S. appetite for venture investment in China increases, more mainstream VCs with visions of liquidity are partnering with China-based VCs. The Road Show will offer our delegation access to the top-tier investors in China, including Baring Private Equity Partners Asia, Simon Murray Group and others!

Beyond Bricks in the Middle(ware) Kingdom.

By now everyone has heard about China's low-cost, low-end manufacturing resources. While the Road Show will look at these advantages, it will also probe China's initiatives to climb the value chain through software development and other value-added products and services.

Silicon China.

Although the battle for bragging rights as China's Silicon Valley continues, Zhongguancun (Haidian) has already produced several of China's most dynamic and successful high technology companies. The Road Show will offer our members an opportunity to sample the entrepreneurial spirit that is abuzz in China.

China.Net.

In recent years valuations of internet companies in China have skyrocketed. Sina, Sohu, Netease, Ctrip have experienced successful IPOs, while eBay and Yahoo! have staked their claim in China through the acquisitions of EachNet and 3721, respectively. The Road Show will examine the internet phenomenon in China through the eyes of entrepreneurs with hindsight experience from Silicon Valley's bubble days.

M.B.A., P.R.C.

Through the Entrepreneur China Network, the Road Show will provide an opportunity to network and socialize with tomorrow's leaders in China -- today. We will visit one of the best EMBA programs in Asia, where its students are experienced in managing sizable Chinese and multi-national businesses.

ASVC and NextGen Partners of Silicon Valley presents

The 2004 Gong Show Business Plan Competition

Start Date: 7/8/2004
Time: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Place: Santa Clara Marriott
Cost: Associate Member: $35
Pledge Member: $50

Asia-Silicon Valley Connection (ASVC) and NextGen Partners of Silicon Valley (NGPSV) would like to cordially invite you to attend the 2004 Gong Show Business Plan Competition. The Gong Show is the fifth business plan competition established to bring together top entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. First, ASVC and NGPSV receive plans from prominent entrepreneurs, incubators, venture capital firms and angel investor groups. Thereafter, a committee of VCs review a wide range of executive summaries submitted by our community of entrepreneurs and selects ten companies to participate in the Gong Show. The presenting companies then undergo a series of coaching sessions with VCs and other consultants in order to prepare them for the competition.

On July 8th, each presenting company will have an opportunity to provide a two-minute elevator pitch to a panel of top-tier VCs and an audience of approximately 200 entrepreneurs, VCs, professional service providers and other industry leaders. Based on these presentations, the venture panel selects four finalist companies to provide a ten-minute "meeting" with the panel. The winning company will be awarded a private meeting with a venture firm represented on the panel.

In prior years, this influential event has been covered by Wired and BusinessWeek. This year, we expect the Gong Show to be covered by a global cable news network.

ASVC and NGPSV are proud to present the following as the 2004 Gong Show Venture Panel:
  • Joyce Chung, General Partner, Cardinal Venture Partners

  • Lucy Lu, Vice President, Technology Management, Roche

  • Todd Jaquez-Fissori, Investment Partner, Siemens Venture Capital

A Nasdaq IPO has been the crown jewel for Chinese companies seeking validation from the market. In the past, many such companies had to settle for backdoor listings on bulletin boards or other secondary exchanges. However, Sina, Sohu and Netease broke new ground by listing on the NASDAQ National Market. Since then, the floodgates of the China IPO have been released, bringing out likes of SMIC, CTRIP, Shanda Networks and many other Chinese businesses posed to go public in 2004. Our conference takes a critical look at the reality of China to Nasdaq IPOs, and will address questions such as the following:
  • Given the uninspiring aftermarket performance of a few recent China based IPOs, are the valuations being given to these issuers justified based on their earnings, or is China going through a repeat of the late-90s internet bubble?
  • The most common model for a China based IPO is to list a Cayman Islands entity with contractual arrangements with local PRC companies. How much protection does this model offer the public company investors? What alternatives are emerging to this traditional model?
  • Are Chinese issuers prepared to comply with the heightened corporate governance and financial statement requirements under Sarbanes-Oxley and NASDAQ Rules?
